Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) are at the forefront of contemporary music performance and composition. While many composition lessons can consist of choosing specific notes, specific chords, and specific rhythms, BCMG takes out the prerequisite of playing an instrument. Instead, their lessons focus on creating sound and art by choosing the type of notes and musical "gestures". This lets students and teachers instantly create music without the need for years of specialist musical training.

Their performance lessons are similarly focussed on exploring sound, and successfully interpreting and performing real contemporary repertoire, rather than a simply recreating performances. This helps engagement levels significantly.
